Storica Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario
A moving journey through the history of the Sassi of Matera and the people who lived there.
Details
The Casa Grotta of Vico Solitario is a typical dwelling carved into the rock of the Sassi of Matera, specifically in the Sasso Caveoso district. It is a cave house consisting of a single room, where the family lived together, often along with their domestic animals.
Inside, the traditional furnishings have been reconstructed: the hearth for cooking, the table, the bed, and spaces used to store food. The house also shows the rainwater collection system in an underground cistern, which was essential for daily life.
Today it is a small museum that helps visitors understand how the inhabitants of the Sassi lived until the 1950s.
